Mae Moh Mine or Lignite Mine is a coal source found in 1917. The coal was about 630 million tons and about 40 million years old. All mine area is under Forestry Department. It is about 20,000 rais and can be used for 50 years. There are many coal electricity plants using this type of coal. Interesting tourist attractions around Mae Moh Mine includes:
1.Lignite Museum (Mae Moh Mine) provides geological knowledge of Mae Moh Mine, history of the mine and electricity production technology via 3D movies and modern technology. The museum is opened on Tuesday – Sunday and closed on Monday. It is opened 4 rounds a day at 9 a.m., 10.30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 14.30 p.m. For more information please contact 0 5425 4950-5.
2.Botanical Garden, a public park renovated from soil wasting area and decorated with beautiful plants. There is a statue of King Prajadhipok who reserved this dam.
3.View Point and Bua Tong Field, an artificial mountain made from the soil in the mine. There is a 84th Anniversary Chalerm Prakiat Garden at the top of the mountain that have a nice scenery. There is also a view point and a Mexican sunflower field that blooms from November to December.
4.Slider Land, a grass land that slopes to the golf course in front of the View Point Building of the Botanical Garden. Visitors can use boxes or snow slides to slide here. It is the activity that visitors should not miss. The snow slide is available for rent in front of the museum.
For visitors who would like to stay overnight at the mine, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand provides 14 bungalows (600 baht/night) and 20 rooms (400 baht/night).
